A government scholarship took them abroad. But then left them in a lurch

Dear reader,

The latest story from our award-winning Common Ground team pulls back the curtain on the experiences of four National Overseas Scholarship awardees, who spoke to Scroll using pseudonyms.

Aditi Kumar, a student pursuing her master's degree in the United States, faced numerous hardships upon arrival in New York. From sleeping on a makeshift bed of coats to skipping meals and struggling to afford basic necessities, her story highlights the financial inadequacies of the scholarship, administered by India’s Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Though the initiative professes to empower students from marginalised communities, it ends up making them feeling neglected and forced to navigate a system that seems indifferent to their struggles.
